Set Visualization User Study

We would like to invite you to take part in a research study comparing different styles of visualizing set systems. The study takes 15-25 minutes: you will be asked to perform several tasks involving identifying music artists and music genres on static images to compare different styles of visualizations. All data will be collected anonymously and will be used for research purposes only.

Target of This Study

The target of this study is to compare different set visualization metaphors and how they are perceived by the user. The collected data is then used to study the speed and accuracy of tasks completed with each style.

Data Set

We created several small data sets of music artists and genres depicting the relationship between artists and their respective genres. All data sets were automatically extracted from Spotify.

Who Can Participate?

Participation is possible for everyone of age 18 and above with no known color vision deficiency. Participation requires an appropriate screen size.

What Data Do We Collect?

We collect demographic information (optional) such as age, gender, education level and prior knowledge on the topic of set visualization. We collect answers given to the tasks of the survey. Lastly, we also collect how the tasks were perceived in a post-task questionaire. All collected data is anonymous

Procedures

  •     Pre-test Survey: collecting demographic information
  •     Tutorial: complete six tasks to get familiar with each visualization style
  •     Survey: complete six groups of three tasks
  •     Post-test Survey: collect opinion on the different visualization styles

Completing all questions of this study should take between 15-25 minutes. Please answer all questions honestly.

Potential Risks and Discomforts

If you experience issues differentiating between colors it can have different causes. Your screen may not be calibrated or your viewing angle might not be optimal. If you think the problem is not technical but due to personal conditions, please contact a medical doctor.

Potential Benefits

While you may not benefit from this research personally, the data collected in this user study will benefit the research community in better understanding how users perceive different set visualization metaphors and ultimately leading to better data visualizations in the media.

Voluntariness, Anonymity and Data Security

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You may terminate your participation in this study at any time and without giving any reason without incurring any disadvantages. The data collected in the course of this study will be treated confidentially. We do not collect any identifying data such as your name, email address, phone number, or IP address. Only project participants have access to the data. The collection, evaluation and publication of the results are carried out in an anonymous form, i.e. without your data being able to be assigned to your person. All data is stored securely on a server of TU Wien.
